| | Getting Started with Twitter |
I am sure by now that there are a lot of you that are using Twitter. But there are still probably plenty of you that don't get it, don't understand it, and are not using it. So I just wanted to highlight why you may want to use it, but also to point out that Twitter is not the be all and end all. Twitter can be one single string in your overall marketing plan.
So what is Twitter. It allows you to send in micro blogs of 140 characters max. and is a totally free service. To get an account, you simply to go Twitter, and register your name. There are some other important things to do: make sure you add your photo, make sure you add your bio and make sure that you set up the mobile phone element. You can have it so that you can receive updates on your mobile phone and PC, or just your PC. You can also set it up to send in updates via your mobile phone and PC if you wish. Why Twitter and what is Important. As mentioned, Twitter allows you to send short updates. In my experience these updates should be: · 70% sharing resources, opinions, info, knowledge, tools · 20% making connections, looking for collaborations, joint ventures · 10% social chit chat Now here is the key to Twitter; if you are updating, but you have no followers, then you are wasting your time. You are effectively talking to an empty room. So you must start to follow people, and you must get followed. That is the real power of Twitter. Then quite simply, each time you update a message, all of your followers will get that message. So if you had 1000 followers, each message you send out would go to 1000 people. Now can you see why it might be something that you should be interested in? Some fo the helpful Twitter tools. To really use the service well, you must downland some other applications and serivces. This will make it muisch easier to use Twitter, develop a following, find followers and really utilise all that Twitter offers. Again, all these applications are free. 1) Tweetdeck I use this free service. It is a small download. It sits on my PC and allows me to update my Twitter account, filter all of the people I am following, reply to people, and perhaps most importantly search. One of the key things about using Tweetdeck is that you can search on keywords. These are the keywords that anyone in the Twitter universe is using. It will then display all the results. You can now start following people in the same line of work as you, direct people with questions or issues to a blog or website of yours that may answer all their questions. You can also email them via Twitter. 2) Twellow allows you to search for people to follow. These can be based on geography, type of work etc. It is critical that you follow people. People rarely follow people, if they see that you are not following others. 3) Twitterfeed. Another free service. Twitterfeed allows you to aggregate RSS feeds from around the internet. So collect an RSS, send the link to Twitterfeed and it automatically updates your Twitter account when that feed automatically updates. So, for example, this blog will automatifcally appear in my Twitter account, without me doing anything. Another major benefit. Do something once, but have it go out to as many people as possible. 4) Tweetlater allows you to automatically follow others, simply because they followed you. It also allows you to send out tweets at times when you are perhaps away, doing other things. So you can seem to be updating, but you are on holiday. Again, another way to save time.
